knight quest: team

After completing his basic Lullay Knight training, Saiph had to pick a specialization path to further hone his skills. While ■■■■■ decided on his specialization without hesitation, Saiph had to think. He knew that his own interest in spellcasting lay outside the skillset of a Knight, so he had to base his choice on more practical factors. Which path would let him help his best friend more effectively? It was a close call. To mend or to heal? He felt that ■■■■■ would need both kinds of assistance. What to do…

Saiph spent most of his training hours away from ■■■■■, but they would always eat their daily meals together. ■■■■■ noticed his furrowed brows during lunchtime and peered at him curiously.

“Let me guess. You can’t choose?”

“Yeah…” Saiph sighed and took a bite of his rye bread. Xyns do not necessarily need to eat during their breaks, but food was nevertheless a good way to restore morale and focus. “I don’t know, both seem like useful skillsets…”

“Just pick the one you like.” His partner was straightforward as ever.

“You know what I like.” Healing and enchanting were both valid types of magic, though ■■■■■ would know that neither were Saiph’s favourite. His lifelong goal was to master as many elements as possible, to weave grand spells and enact great change. Magic was useless against Corruption Beasts, so the knights rarely trained in advanced spellcasting, forcing Saiph to study on his own. Thus: “I just want to be able to support you the best I can.”

Hearing that, ■■■■■ fell silent. It was hard to see against his pale fur, but the tips of his ears were turning a bit red.

Saiph waited for him to regain his composure, chewing on the rest of his lunch. No doubt his companion was weighing the pros and cons of each specialization in his mind with regards to his own fighting style. ■■■■■ made up for his average physical strength with his agility, bounding around the battlefield instead of flying with his wings. His speed enabled him to avoid most enemy attacks, but he could not wear heavy armour, and was a lot more fragile compared to the senior Vexyn knights.

“... Mender, I think.” Was his answer after careful deliberation. “Healing is useful, but I’d rather not get injured in the first place. Prevention is better than cure, or whatever they say.”

Saiph nodded. He had complete trust in ■■■■■’s strategy. After all, an unconventional approach was often the key to breaking through a stalemate.

“Alright, Mender it is.” This specialization focused on protective shields and repairing armour, both of which Saiph could complete with relative ease. He wouldn’t feel comfortable with sending ■■■■■ out to battle without proper gear, either. “I’ll submit my decision later.”

■■■■■ made a sound of acknowledgement and resumed attacking his food. His blue mane had gotten long enough to cover his eyes, preventing Saiph from seeing his expression. However, he didn’t need to see ■■■■■’s face to tell how he felt. Their warmly entwined tails were more than enough.

Note: This story is set a long time ago (at least 100 years before the current time). Azrael’s childhood name is represented as ■■■■■ in the story due to an incident later on in his life which erased the traces of his past identity (and also retroactively removed all records of his birth name).
