knight quest: enchant
Part of Saiph’s duty as a Lullay Knight Mender was the upkeep of protective wards and other knights’ equipment. Since his hometown was somewhat close to the Corrupted Lands, they faced somewhat frequent incursions by corruption creatures and the occasional small Beast. There was always something around town that needed fixing, and he rarely found himself idle for long.
Today, he began his work routine by patrolling the outskirts of town. Instead of a single big barrier like the ones around Moonreach and Valorise, the town was surrounded by a series of interlocking smaller shields. They were placed evenly around the town’s outer walls, and Saiph took care to inspect each ward keystone that he came across. Some were knocked loose from their positions, either by weather or by passing creatures. In these cases, he searched for the misplaced ward stone and returned it to its rightful post. Others showed signs of magical energy depletion, so he fortified the spells etched on their surfaces with enchanted ink. Thankfully, no stones were missing this time - making a new keystone took at least three days, and it was hard to rule out foul play in case of a stolen ward stone.
Inspecting the wards took almost the whole morning, and he returned to the knight barracks just in time for lunch break. He would usually grab a small rye bread bun from the canteen and slowly chew his way through the snack while moonbathing. If his best friend was around, they would spend their break time together. However, their schedules have diverged a lot more ever since they attained their respective knight specializations. Often, they could only meet each other at the end of a day’s work.
Saiph was a diligent worker, so he always ended his break on time and returned to his tasks without delay. He spent the afternoon in the workshop repairing other knights’ equipment. Maintaining the Vexyn knights’ metal armour required the expertise of a blacksmith, so Saiph focused his efforts on the Moxyn knights’ leather armour instead. Years of living under foster care spurred him to pick up some basic sewing skills, which he honed during his Mender specialization training. His strong focus and attention to detail allowed him to restore worn-down armour pieces to battle-ready conditions with great efficiency. He also made sure to reapply all the standard-issue protective enchantments onto the equipment. However, his meticulousness often led to headaches if he worked for too long, forcing him to take regular breaks and stretch his paws.
Once the repairs were done for the day, Saiph turned his attention to research. He was always in search of new ways to improve his personal staff, whether in its catalytic ability or mana storage capacity. He relied on an array of converters to cast spells of various elements, and these tools were always in need of maintenance. Having his staff blow up in the middle of a battle would be disastrous, so he spared no expense in acquiring the best materials for its upkeep. Sometimes, he would even sacrifice his resting hours until he was perfectly satisfied with his handiwork.
Through daily practice and lifelong learning, Saiph would go on to become a skilled enchanter and invent various new gadgets to aid knights in their duties.
