Aeon and Soma were both knight companions and also very good friends outside of work. While Aeon was highly curious and often dashed out to investigate unusual happenings immediately, Soma was much more patient and detail-oriented. He often had to rein in Aeon’s impulsive nature and encourage him to take things one step at a time. The difference in their attitude became much more obvious as Lunerest endured its first crisis in many years - Aeon spent most of his time as a Scout investigating, but never had any time to actually stop and take a closer look at what he discovered. A lot of other knights seemed to share his enthusiasm, whether out of a misplaced sense of heroism, or out of anxiety against an unknown threat. As a result, the shattered relics found by the knights were left unrepaired, and the situation back home began to worsen.

Soma knew he had to do something. He stopped accompanying Aeon out on his forays - while it was a difficult decision to leave his companion alone, he knew that he had to put duty and reality first. He trusted Aeon to do what he did best, and resolved himself to do what he could excel in.

He spent many days in Moonreach assisting Oberon with his work. Slowly, fragments of the shattered relics were being brought to the Knights’ headquarters, but no one could figure out what function they served in their original state. Their only clue lay in the soft glow that the relics emitted when charged with magical energy – a gentle, beautiful light that reminded many xyns of Lunerest’s moons.

Soma was a Fighter first and foremost – he dedicated himself to training his martial skill, and had comparatively less knowledge in the domains of magic and enchantment. He often felt discouraged when inspecting or attempting to repair the relics, too fearful of breaking the fragments even further if he made a mistake. Thus, he chose to observe Oberon’s work instead, trying to understand the underlying principles of magic and how the relic responded to magical tools. He didn’t want to disturb the archmage in his work, but soon found that he had no idea what was going on either. This deeply troubled him – what good were his combat skills if Lunerest was facing an enemy that could not be defeated in battle?

His inner turmoil was noticed by another Knight who was assisting with Oberon’s research. A grey-maned Lullay Knight with a calm countenance approached him one day and asked if he needed help. Soma was quick to admit his own incompetence, knowing that he had to adapt, even if it meant stepping out of his comfort zone. His answer satisfied Saiph, who took the younger Knight under his wing and began tutoring him in magical principles.

Saiph took Soma to the library every day for a crash course in enchanted relics. First, he quizzed Soma on what he knew about the subject, which was not much. Then, he drew out concise diagrams and impressed the principles of spellcraft upon him. Soma was determined to learn as much as possible, often staying in the library late into the night so he could record down everything he wanted to know. Lunerest needed him now, and he would not fail the people and beautiful land he wished to protect.

As for Saiph, he was heartened to see that Soma was working hard. Knowing that the successive generations of knights carried the torch forward set his heart at ease. He could depart on his frequent travels with confidence that his homeland would continue to be protected.

A month of lectures and hands-on practice later, Soma was ready to join the relic repair efforts. Oberon had discovered the relics were once used to amplify the Moons’ power, so it was important to preserve the enchantments they carried. He carefully observed the fragments’ physical state and mapped out the mana channels running through the ethereal material. Under Saiph’s watchful eye, he slowly stitched the fragments into larger pieces, making sure to connect the sigils in the correct orientation.

Over the course of a week, he managed to repair one of the relics. Its original form was a shining pearl-white disc that gave off a gentle glow. Saiph channeled some mana into the relic, and all the Knights nearby could feel a soothing aura emanating from the disc, as if it was a small simulacrum of Lunerest’s beloved moons.

There were still many, many tasks left to do, but they were now one step closer to bringing peace back to Lunerest.
